The story follows Tim Templeton, who recounts his experiences as a seven-year-old boy living with his parents, Ted and Janice. One day, Tim is shocked when a baby wearing a business suit arrives at their home in a taxi. His parents introduce the baby as Tim’s new little brother. Tim becomes jealous of the attention the baby receives and grows suspicious of his odd behavior and mature demeanor, which his parents seem to ignore.
Tim soon discovers that the baby, who calls himself “The Boss,” can speak like an adult. Eager to get rid of him, Tim uses a cassette tape to record a conversation between The Boss Baby and other toddlers during a secret meeting disguised as a playdate. The Boss Baby reveals that puppies are receiving more love than babies and that he is searching for a new file from Puppy Co., a company developing products for dogs.
When Tim is caught spying, a chase ensues, and The Boss Baby threatens to destroy Tim’s favorite stuffed animal, Lam-Lam. In an attempt to slingshot The Boss Baby out of a window, Tim accidentally launches the cassette tape outside, and it is destroyed by a passing car. With no evidence to prove his claims, Tim’s parents ground him until he agrees to befriend The Boss Baby.
