In February 1938, Death narrates the story of a young girl named Liesel Meminger, who captures his attention. The story begins with twelve-year-old Liesel traveling by train with her mother and younger brother. Tragically, her brother passes away during the journey and is buried beside the railway tracks. During the burial, Liesel steals her first book, *The Grave Digger’s Handbook*, after it falls from the gravedigger’s pocket.
Liesel is then taken to Munich, where she is placed with her new foster parents, Rosa and Hans Hubermann. On her first day of school, she befriends her neighbor, Rudy Steiner. When Liesel is asked to write her name on the chalkboard, she manages only three Xs, exposing her inability to read and write. This leads to ridicule from her classmates, particularly Franz Deutscher, who challenges her to read a single word. In response, Liesel fights him, earning Rudy’s admiration and initiating their friendship.
Recognizing Liesel’s struggles, Hans begins teaching her to read using the stolen book and a large chalkboard. Liesel quickly becomes passionate about reading. Distraught by the destruction of literature, Liesel secretly retrieves a partially burned book and is discovered by Ilsa Hermann, the mayor’s wife. Later, while delivering laundry to the mayor’s home, Liesel realizes Ilsa witnessed her act, adding tension to their encounters.
