Description: “The Boogeyman,” a 2023 American supernatural horror film directed by Rob Savage, is based on Stephen King’s 1973 short story of the same name. Written by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman, the film features Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, Vivien Lyra Blair, and David Dastmalchian in leading roles.
The story follows the Harper family—sisters Sadie and Sawyer, and their therapist father, Will—as they grapple with the sudden loss of their mother and wife in a car accident. Their lives take a dark turn when a disturbed man named Lester Billings visits Will’s office, claiming that an evil entity has killed his three children. Skeptical, Will attempts to call the police, but Lester disappears, only to be found dead by Sadie in her mother’s art closet.
Soon, strange occurrences plague the Harper household. Sadie notices mysterious mold spreading, while Sawyer encounters a sinister creature lurking under her bed. Suspecting a connection to Lester’s death, Sadie investigates his rundown home and meets Lester’s wife, Rita, who reveals the creature is the Boogeyman—a malevolent being that feeds on fear and mimics voices. Rita explains that light is the only defense against it. Fearing for their safety, Sadie rushes back home, determined to protect her family.
Initially announced in 2018, the project was delayed due to Disney’s acquisition of Fox but was revived in 2021 with Savage at the helm. Filming began in February 2022 in New Orleans. Originally intended for Hulu, the film received a theatrical release on June 2, 2023, through 20th Century Studios. It garnered mixed reviews from critics and earned $82 million worldwide.
