Description: The Blind Side is a 2009 film that tells the story of Michael “Big Mike” Oher, a seventeen-year-old boy who has spent much of his life in foster care in Memphis, Tennessee. Due to his mother’s struggles with drug addiction, Michael has been moved between various foster families, often running back to her each time. With the help of a friend of his father, Michael is enrolled at Wingate Christian School, where his impressive size and athleticism catch the attention of the football coach, Burt Cotton. Despite his poor academic performance, Michael is admitted to the school.
At Wingate, Michael befriends a younger student named Sean “SJ” Tuohy Jr., whose mother, Leigh Anne Tuohy, is a determined interior designer married to wealthy businessman Sean Tuohy Sr. One day, Leigh Anne and Sean notice Michael picking up leftover food after their daughter Collins’ volleyball game. Later, Leigh Anne spots Michael walking alone on a cold night, shivering without proper clothing. Learning that he plans to sleep outside the school gym, she invites him to stay at their home for the night.
The next morning, Michael leaves the Tuohy house, but Leigh Anne finds him and invites him to spend Thanksgiving with her family. She then takes him to his mother’s house, only to find it abandoned with an eviction notice on the door. Over time, Michael becomes a part of the Tuohy family, though Leigh Anne faces criticism from her friends, who express concerns about Collins’ safety around him. Despite this, Leigh Anne stands by Michael, and Collins supports keeping him in their home.
As Leigh Anne pursues becoming Michael’s legal guardian, she discovers that he was taken from his drug-addicted mother at the age of seven and that his mother’s current whereabouts are unknown. Despite his low academic scores, Michael is revealed to have exceptional protective instincts, ranking in the 98th percentile in that category. The film portrays Michael’s journey of finding a family and discovering his potential.
