**Storyline:**
LAPD Detectives Dwight “Bucky” Bleichert and Lee Blanchard are partnered after a department fundraising boxing match. Lee introduces Bucky to his girlfriend, Kay Lake, and the trio forms a close bond. Bucky is surprised when Kay reveals she isn’t romantically involved with Lee and later attempts to seduce him, but he declines. Bucky also discovers Kay has been branded with the initials “BD,” referring to Bobby DeWitt, a gangster whose arrest significantly boosted Lee’s career.
On January 15, 1947, the dismembered body of aspiring actress Elizabeth Short is discovered, and the media dubs her “The Black Dahlia.” Both detectives become consumed by the case. Bucky learns Elizabeth had connections to the adult film industry and frequented lesbian social circles. During his investigation, Bucky meets Madeleine Linscott, who bears a striking resemblance to Elizabeth. Madeleine, hailing from a wealthy family, admits to being close with Elizabeth but urges Bucky to keep her involvement confidential in exchange for intimacy. She quickly introduces him to her affluent parents.
Meanwhile, Lee’s obsession with the case causes him to become increasingly erratic and abusive toward Kay. After a heated argument between Bucky and Lee regarding a past case, Bucky visits their home to apologize, only to discover Lee was following a lead on Bobby DeWitt. Bucky locates DeWitt in a building atrium, but Lee arrives and shoots him. In the chaos, a man garrotes Lee, and another individual slits his throat. Both Lee and his attacker fall to their deaths.
