**Storyline:**
Gio’s mission, as described in acting terms, is to deliver a cake across Brooklyn for a yearly gathering of his late father’s former mafia associates, held to honor the deceased. Along the journey, he encounters a variety of intriguing characters, including familiar faces from Martin Scorsese films and *The Sopranos*, such as Vincent Pastore and Paul Sorvino. Even Marla Maples, Donald Trump’s ex-wife, makes a brief appearance.
The story culminates in a surprising twist with Val Kilmer cast as the big boss, followed by a quick and dramatic revenge-tragedy climax that leaves little resolved or learned.
Jimmy Giannopoulos, the writer-director-composer behind the film, has few prior credits, making this gangster drama his first feature. Despite a wandering script and an over-the-top ending, the movie boasts an impressive cast. While lead actor Shiloh Fernandez, who portrays Gio, isn’t yet widely recognized, he shares scenes with Ewan McGregor as a priest who narrates the story (McGregor’s daughter Clara, a producer, also has a minor role). Lorraine Bracco appears as Gio’s widowed mother and the baker of the titular birthday cake.
Though the film is unconventional, with oddly placed classic songs that don’t always match the action, it benefits from the skilled cinematography of Sean Price Williams. Known for his work on indie films like *White Girl* and *Her Smell*, as well as the Safdie brothers’ *Good Time*, Williams captures the essence of New York City at night—its wet sidewalks, glowing bodega signs, and seedy, neon-lit clubs.”
