**Storyline:**
The film weaves together three parallel stories set in the years leading up to the 2007 housing market crash. These narratives are loosely connected through the characters’ actions during this critical period.
In 2005, eccentric hedge fund manager Michael Burry uncovers the instability of the U.S. housing market, which is heavily reliant on high-risk subprime loans. Predicting a collapse when interest rates rise from adjustable-rate mortgages, Burry proposes creating a credit default swap market to bet against mortgage-backed securities for profit.
Burry’s ambitious $1 billion bet is accepted by major banks, but it requires significant monthly premiums. This decision frustrates his clients, including Lawrence Fields, who accuses him of wasting capital. Despite pressure to reverse his strategy, Burry stands firm, eventually restricting withdrawals and facing lawsuits. When the market finally crashes, his fund’s value skyrockets by 489%, generating a profit of over $2.69 billion, with Lawrence alone receiving $489 million.
Meanwhile, Jared Vennett, a Deutsche Bank executive, becomes one of the first to understand Burry’s analysis and enters the market to profit from selling swaps. A misdirected phone call catches the attention of Mark Baum, a hedge fund manager at FrontPoint Partners, who decides to invest in these swaps due to his distrust of banks’ ethics.
Vennett explains that the bundling of subprime loans into high-rated collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) ensures their inevitable collapse. Baum and his team conduct an investigation in South Florida, discovering that mortgage brokers are fueling the bubble by selling risky mortgages to Wall Street banks.
