Storyline:
Richard, a young American in search of adventure, arrives in Bangkok and stays at a simple travelers’ hotel on Khao San Road. There, he meets a French couple, Françoise and Étienne, and is immediately drawn to Françoise. He also encounters Daffy, who shares a secret about a pristine, uninhabited island in the Gulf of Thailand, home to a hidden beach and lagoon. Daffy reveals that he and others once settled there but left due to challenges. After Daffy’s tragic suicide, Richard inherits a map to the island and convinces Françoise and Étienne to join him on his quest. Their journey takes them to Ko Samui, where Richard encounters American surfers who’ve also heard rumors about the island, including its alleged cannabis fields. Before leaving, Richard secretly gives them a copy of the map.
As they travel to the island, Richard grows increasingly infatuated with Françoise. Upon arrival, they discover a guarded cannabis plantation but manage to evade the armed Thai farmers. They eventually find a hidden community of travelers led by Sal, who explains the rules: they can stay as long as they remain hidden and don’t invite more visitors. Richard lies, claiming they haven’t shared the map with anyone, and the trio integrates into the self-sufficient community.
One night, Françoise confesses her feelings for Richard, and their secret affair begins. However, the community soon discovers their relationship, causing tension with Étienne, who reluctantly accepts it if Françoise is happier with Richard. Conflict also arises between Richard and Bugs, Sal’s jealous boyfriend, after Richard gains admiration for killing a shark, despite Bugs mocking him for the shark’s small size.
