Description: The Banshees of Inisherin is a 2022 film set on the fictional Irish isle of Inisherin during the final stages of the Irish Civil War in 1923. The story revolves around folk musician Colm Doherty, who suddenly begins ignoring his longtime friend and drinking companion, Pádraic Súilleabháin. While Pádraic is kind-hearted and well-liked by the islanders, Colm finds him too dull and decides to distance himself to focus on composing music and creating a legacy.
Pádraic is deeply affected by the loss of his friend and becomes increasingly distressed by Colm’s rejection. As Pádraic tries to mend their relationship, Colm reacts harshly, issuing an ultimatum: every time Pádraic bothers him or attempts to talk, Colm will cut off one of his own left fingers using sheep shears. Despite efforts from Pádraic’s caring sister, Siobhán, and a troubled local man named Dominic to mediate, tensions escalate. In a dramatic moment, Colm cuts off one of his fingers and delivers it to Pádraic after a heated confrontation.
As the situation worsens, Mrs. McCormick, a local elder, warns Pádraic of impending death on the island. Meanwhile, Siobhán gently declines Dominic’s romantic advances and eventually leaves the island for a new life on the mainland. Colm completes a musical piece titled “The Banshees of Inisherin” and considers reconciling with Pádraic—until he discovers Pádraic deceived one of his musician friends into leaving the island.
Enraged, Colm cuts off his remaining left fingers and throws them at Pádraic’s door. Tragically, Pádraic’s beloved donkey, Jenny, dies after choking on one of the severed fingers. Devastated, Pádraic blames Colm for the loss of his pet and vows to retaliate by burning down Colm’s house the following day.
