Description: “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” released in 2018, tells the story of Buster Scruggs, a cheerful singing cowboy. The tale begins with Buster entering a remote cantina filled with outlaws. After exchanging insults with a patron, he skillfully shoots everyone as they attempt to draw their guns. Next, Buster travels to Frenchman’s Gulch and enters a saloon, leaving his weapons at the door to follow the establishment’s no-firearms rule. He joins a poker game left vacant by a player who had been dealt the infamous dead man’s hand. The other players insist Buster continue the game, but he refuses. When a menacing player named Joe confronts him with a hidden pistol, Buster outsmarts him, causing Joe to accidentally shoot himself.
After breaking the tension with a lively song about “Surly Joe,” Buster faces another challenge from Joe’s brother. In a dramatic gunfight, Buster disarms his opponent with precise shots before triumphing. Soon after, a young singing cowboy dressed in black arrives and challenges Buster to a duel. To Buster’s surprise, the young man proves to be a quicker draw, fatally shooting him. As Buster reflects on his fate, he acknowledges that no one can remain the best forever. The young man and Buster then share a bittersweet duet, marking the end of Buster’s journey.
