**StoryLine:**
Amelia Vanek is a troubled and exhausted widow living in Adelaide, Australia, raising her six-year-old son Samuel alone. Her husband, Oskar, died in a car accident while driving her to the hospital during labor. Sam begins to exhibit erratic behavior, struggling with insomnia and becoming obsessed with an imaginary monster. He even builds weapons to fight it. Amelia is forced to pick him up from school after he brings one of these weapons to class.
One night, Sam asks his mother to read a pop-up storybook titled *Mister Babadook*. The book describes a monster called the Babadook, a tall, pale-faced humanoid in a top hat with clawed fingers that torments anyone who becomes aware of its existence. Amelia is disturbed by the book and its mysterious appearance, while Sam becomes convinced the Babadook is real. His obsession keeps Amelia awake at night as she tries to comfort him.
Soon, strange events begin to occur: doors open and close on their own, eerie sounds are heard, and Amelia finds glass shards in her food. She blames Sam’s behavior, but he insists the Babadook is responsible. Amelia rips up the book and throws it away. At her birthday party, Sam’s cousin Ruby bullies him for not having a father, leading him to push her out of a treehouse, resulting in a broken nose. Amelia’s sister, Claire, confesses she cannot stand Sam, which deeply offends Amelia. On the way home, Sam has another vision of the Babadook and suffers a seizure, prompting Amelia to obtain sedatives from a pediatrician.
The next morning, Amelia discovers the *Mister Babadook* book has been reassembled on her doorstep. New words taunt her, warning that the Babadook will grow stronger if she continues to deny its existence. The book includes pop-up images of Amelia killing her dog, Bugsy, Sam, and then herself.
