The story begins on June 2, 1967, when the Shah of Iran visits West Berlin and attends a performance at the Deutsche Oper. Protesters from the West German student movement demonstrate against his policies in Iran. The West Berlin police and the Shah’s security forces respond aggressively, resulting in the fatal shooting of unarmed protester Benno Ohnesorg by Officer Karl-Heinz Kurras.
This incident shocks West Germany, prompting left-wing journalist Ulrike Meinhof to publicly criticize the government, labeling it a fascist police state. Inspired by her words, radicals Gudrun Ensslin and Andreas Baader orchestrate the 1968 Frankfurt department store bombing. While reporting on their trial, Meinhof becomes increasingly drawn to their cause and forms a close friendship with Ensslin during a jailhouse interview.
Leaving her husband for fellow journalist Peter Homann, Meinhof grows more involved with the radical group. Meanwhile, Ensslin and Baader, released pending an appeal, recruit new members, including Astrid Proll and Peter-Jurgen Boock. After a period abroad, they return to West Germany and join Meinhof, who becomes increasingly disillusioned with her middle-class life and yearns for more direct action.
When Baader is arrested, Meinhof arranges an off-site interview, which turns into a daring prison break. Although initially planned to appear as an innocent bystander, Meinhof flees with Baader and Ensslin, implicating herself in the violent escape. After leaving her children in Sicily, the group travels to Jordan for training at a Fatah camp, where their behavior alienates their hosts. Homann eventually leaves after overhearing plans to eliminate him.
The Baader Meinhof Complex explores the radicalization, struggles, and consequences faced by these individuals as they wage their unconventional war against the system.
