**Storyline:**
In 1927, George Valentin, a renowned silent film star, poses for pictures outside the premiere of his latest hit movie. During the event, a young woman named Peppy Miller accidentally bumps into him. The next day, Peppy’s face appears on the front page of *Variety* with the headline, “Who’s That Girl?” Inspired by the attention, Peppy auditions as a dancer and is noticed by Valentin, who insists she be given a role in Kinograph Studios’ next production, despite objections from the studio boss, Al Zimmer. During a scene they perform together, Valentin and Peppy display incredible chemistry, even though she is just an extra. With Valentin’s guidance—like suggesting a beauty mark that becomes her trademark—Peppy steadily climbs the ranks in the film industry, securing more prominent roles.
Two years later, Zimmer announces the end of silent film production at Kinograph Studios, but Valentin dismisses the move, believing sound in films is just a passing trend. However, in a dream, Valentin begins to hear environmental sounds but cannot speak himself. This unsettling experience leaves him in a panic. Determined to prove his point, Valentin self-produces and directs a silent film titled *Tears of Love*. Unfortunately, the film’s release coincides with Peppy’s new sound film, *Beauty Spot*, and the 1929 stock market crash. Valentin’s film fails to attract audiences, leading to his financial ruin. His wife, Doris, forces him to leave their home, and he moves into an apartment with his loyal chauffeur, Clifton, and his dog. Meanwhile, Peppy continues her rise to stardom in Hollywood.
