George and Kathy, married in July 1975, sought a fresh start and decided to move into the new home with Kathy’s three children from a previous marriage: Daniel (9), Christopher (7), and Melissa (5). They also owned a Malamute/Labrador mix named Harry. During their initial visit, the real estate agent informed them about the house’s dark history, but the couple chose to proceed with the purchase.
The Lutz family moved in on December 18, 1975, along with some of the DeFeo family’s furniture, which was included in the deal for $400. A friend insisted on having the house blessed, a process George, a non-practicing Methodist, was unfamiliar with. Kathy, a non-practicing Catholic, explained the procedure, and they enlisted Father Ray, a Catholic priest, to perform the blessing.
Upon entering the house to conduct the ritual, Father Ray heard a deep, male voice commanding him to leave, marking the beginning of the family’s terrifying experiences in the infamous Amityville house.
