Storyline:
As a child, Christian Wolff is diagnosed with high-functioning autism at Harbor Neuroscience. His father rejects the idea of placing him in a more suitable environment for his sensory processing disorder, believing Christian must learn to overcome his challenges. Overwhelmed by the situation, Christian’s mother leaves the family. Concerned that others might take advantage of his son, Christian’s father—a U.S. Army Psychological Operations officer—subjects him and his brother, Braxton, to intense stoicism and martial arts training.
In the present, Christian works as a forensic accountant from a small office in Plainfield, Illinois. He uncovers financial fraud for both legitimate businesses and criminal organizations. His clients communicate with him through a mysterious woman known as “The Voice.” To cope with his sensory issues, Christian exposes himself to loud music and flashing lights daily.
Christian is hired to audit Living Robotics after discrepancies are discovered by in-house accountant Dana Cummings. He uncovers that over $61 million has been embezzled from the company. The CFO, Ed Chilton, is forced by a hitman to commit suicide using an insulin overdose, leaving Christian distressed as he cannot complete the audit.
Meanwhile, Ray King, the Director of FinCEN, is determined to track down Christian, known only as “The Accountant.” He coerces Treasury analyst Marybeth Medina into helping him. Medina identifies Christian’s aliases, including his current identity, Christian Wolff, and traces him to his Illinois office.
