Description: The 94th Annual Academy Awards ceremony, organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), celebrated the finest films released between March 1 and December 31, 2021. The event took place on March 27, 2022, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. This year’s ceremony was hosted by Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes, marking the first time since 2011 that multiple hosts led the show. CODA achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Best Picture winner produced by an internet streaming service, Apple TV+. In addition to Best Picture, CODA secured two other awards. Dune emerged as the top winner with six awards, while The Eyes of Tammy Faye claimed two. Other notable winners included The Power of the Dog, King Richard, West Side Story, Drive My Car, Encanto, Belfast, No Time to Die, Cruella, The Long Goodbye, The Queen of Basketball, Summer of Soul, and The Windshield Wiper, each taking home one award. The ceremony was also marked by controversy when actor Will Smith approached the stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock following a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
Due to the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the film industry, the Academy retained modified eligibility criteria from the previous year. These changes included recognizing direct-to-digital releases and offering flexibility for theatrical runs in cities outside Los Angeles. Since the 93rd Academy Awards extended eligibility through February 2021, only films released between March 1 and December 31, 2021, were considered for the 94th Academy Awards. Voting for nominations concluded on February 1, 2022, with the nominations being revealed on February 8, 2022, by Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan. In April 2020, the Academy announced that the Best Picture category would include ten nominees, a practice that has been in place since the 84th Academy Awards, depending on the ballot process.
