“The 33” is a technically impressive depiction of the 2010 Chilean mining disaster, where 33 miners were trapped underground for an astonishing 69 days. Their struggle became a global cause, and their unlikely rescue was a moment of worldwide attention comparable to the first moon landing. The film features an international cast, including Antonio Banderas and Lou Diamond Phillips, both of whom have strong Latino connections, alongside French actress Juliette Binoche and Irish actor Gabriel Byrne, who portray Chileans. Director Riggen’s skillful handling of the cast creates a seamless ensemble, making the unconventional casting choices work effectively.
The film opens with a party scene introducing the main characters. Among them is an elderly miner retiring from the profession, an experienced miner seeking an extra shift, and a younger miner contemplating leaving the industry after becoming a father. “The 33” effectively combines human drama with the tension of the disaster and rescue, offering a compelling retelling of this remarkable story.
