It is based on a fake trailer created for Grindhouse in 2007, making it the third feature-length film adapted from a Grindhouse trailer, following Machete and Hobo with a Shotgun. The plot kicks off in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where shoppers gather outside the RightMart store for a Black Friday sale. Jessica Wright, whose father owns the store, sneaks her boyfriend Bobby and friends inside through a side door. When the crowd outside sees them, chaos ensues, leading to multiple fatalities, including the store manager’s wife, Amanda Collins. Bobby suffers a broken arm while trying to help others and subsequently vanishes.
One year later, as another Black Friday approaches, Jessica and her friends find themselves intertwined in a social media post depicting a Thanksgiving table with their names. Bobby, who has since broken up with Jessica and returned to Plymouth to regain employment after his injuries, creates tension with Jessica’s new boyfriend, Ryan. A waitress named Lizzie, who has connections to the previous year’s incident, is brutally attacked by a figure in a John Carver mask, prompting the police to suspect that the killer is targeting survivors of the massacre.
Thanksgiving premiered in U.S. theaters on November 17, 2023, with critics offering generally favorable reviews. The film has grossed $45.6 million globally, and a sequel is currently in development.
