Description: “Tethered,” released in 2022, presents a straightforward yet intriguing premise, surprising for a film with three credited writers—Jeff Cox, Michael Scott, and director Daniel Robinette. Despite its modest budget, the movie excels in world-building, though shortcomings in editing and script elements are noticeable. While it effectively delivers on its core concept, it misses the mark of achieving true greatness.
The story revolves around Solomon, a blind boy portrayed by Jared Laufree, who lives in the woods with his mother, played by Alexandra Paul. Their isolated existence is governed by strict rules enforced by a mysterious beast lurking nearby. These rules include giving back to the land by sharing half of their hunted prey with the creature, singing a comforting “our song,” and never letting go of the rope that tethers Solomon to their home. When his mother passes away, these principles help him survive as a blind teenager in the wilderness.
Years later, Solomon encounters Hank (Kareem Ferguson), a hunter who stumbles upon their property. Although Solomon is wary of Hank, he acknowledges his practicality and his own limitations. When Hank hears the monster, he pushes Solomon to confront his fears, challenging him to either face the creature or remain confined to his secluded life forever. The film explores themes of survival, fear, and human connection in a compelling yet underdeveloped manner.
