**Storyline:**
The story begins with Nikola Tesla recalling a childhood moment when he first noticed electricity while petting his cat. In 1884, Tesla (played by Ethan Hawke) is working in New York City for Thomas Edison (Kyle MacLachlan), who undervalues him. After a confrontation, the two end up smashing ice cream cones in each other’s faces.
The narrator, revealed to be Anne Morgan (Eve Hewson), interrupts the narrative, stating that this depiction may not be entirely accurate. She points out that a simple Google search about Tesla yields far fewer results compared to Edison. She then delves into Tesla’s past, highlighting his first inspiration for the motor he would later invent.
The film explores Tesla’s struggles and financial hardships before he finally finds backers willing to pay him more than Edison. In 1885, Edison meets his second wife, Mina (Hannah Gross), while Tesla focuses on developing his induction motor with the help of his friend Anthony Szigeti (Ebon Moss-Bachrach).
Their spark-less motor receives widespread acclaim, and Tesla eventually meets Anne, the daughter of financier J.P. Morgan (Donnie Keshawarz). Tesla presents his discoveries, leading George Westinghouse (Jim Gaffigan) to purchase his patents. Tesla is then brought to Pittsburgh to oversee production, where Westinghouse informs him of the ongoing rivalry between Edison’s direct current and Tesla’s alternating current.
As Tesla continues his work, Szigeti shows him a newly discovered compass, only to learn that someone else had already invented it. Discouraged, Szigeti leaves town. Meanwhile, William Kemmler becomes the first person executed via electric induction, a method Edison blames on medical errors. Despite her father’s affiliation with Edison, Tesla begins a relationship with Anne.
