Description: The story unfolds in a village where Amin, the local leader, considers devices displaying images, such as televisions, mobile phones, photographs, and computers, forbidden under Islamic law. When his son Solaiman requests permission to buy a mobile phone for business purposes, his true intention is to communicate more with his girlfriend, Kohinoor. Her father, who grew wealthy working in Malaysia, allowed her to own a phone easily. Amin, however, refuses Solaiman’s request. Desperate, Solaiman turns to Mojnu, Amin’s right-hand man, who manipulates Amin into reconsidering. Unknown to Solaiman, Mojnu is also in love with Kohinoor and repeatedly expresses his feelings, only to be rejected. Solaiman treats Mojnu with the same arrogance his father shows him. Chaos ensues when Amin permits Kumar Babu, a local teacher, to keep a television in his home, but restricts its use to non-Muslims. This decision sparks rebellion, leaving Amin to face the consequences.

Mostofa Sarwar Farooki explores the clash between tradition and modernity, particularly in Bangladeshi society, where adherence to past interpretations of religious law conflicts with the allure of modern technology. While this theme is common in global cinema, Farooki’s unique approach sets the film apart. The narrative is delivered through social satire, blending humor with commentary rather than relying on drama.

The heart of the story lies in the love triangle between Solaiman, Kohinoor, and Mojnu. Their interactions, particularly Solaiman’s obliviousness and Mojnu’s persistence, provide continuous humor. Memorable scenes, such as those involving a mustache and a drinking sequence, stand out. The comedy extends to the villagers’ creative attempts to bypass Amin’s restrictions, especially regarding watching television. One particularly hilarious moment features a fake oversized TV on the beach.

Farooki’s wit and the film’s satirical tone make “Television” a compelling exploration of societal tensions, wrapped in humor and clever storytelling.
