Description: In the early 1980s, teenagers Martin Asher and Matt Soulsby meet on a bus headed to Mont-Laurier, Quebec. When the bus breaks down, they manage to get a car, but it soon has a flat tire. While Matt is fixing the tire, Martin notices they are about the same height and pushes him into the path of an oncoming truck, killing Matt and the truck driver. Martin then takes Matt’s guitar and clothes, continuing his journey on foot while singing in a voice similar to Matt’s.
Two decades later, FBI profiler Illeana Scott is called by Inspector Leclair to assist Montreal authorities in tracking down a serial killer who steals his victims’ identities, allowing him to travel unnoticed across North America. Illeana interviews art dealer James Costa, who witnessed the killer’s latest murder. James provides a sketch of the suspect, leading the police to an apartment where they find a decaying corpse chained to the ceiling. Martin’s mother, Rebecca, claims to have seen her son—long believed dead—alive on a ferry to Quebec City. This prompts the exhumation of the body buried as Martin for forensic analysis, and he becomes the prime suspect.
At Rebecca’s home, Illeana learns that Martin was an unwanted child who became unstable after the death of his favored twin brother. She discovers a hidden passageway behind a cabinet leading to Martin’s secret room, where she is attacked by an unknown assailant who escapes before she can identify him.
Illeana deduces that Asher targets his victims to live as someone other than himself and that his next target is James. A sting operation is set up to lure Asher, but it fails. During an event at James’ gallery, he is attacked by the presumed Asher, whom Illeana tries to capture but loses in the crowd. As the police prepare to relocate James, the assailant confronts him, kills his police escort, and takes James at gunpoint. Illeana pursues them, causing the car to crash and explode just as James escapes.
