Description: In the Japanese film “Tag” (2015), a quiet high school girl named Mitsuko survives a mysterious wind that slices through her school bus, killing everyone else. This deadly wind continues to pursue her, claiming the lives of other girls she encounters. Confused and frightened, Mitsuko stumbles onto a high school campus where she meets three girls: Aki, Sur, and Taeko. Aki comforts her, and they skip class to go to the woods. There, Sur explains the concept of multiple realities and predetermination, suggesting fate can be altered by doing something unexpected.
Back at school, their teacher suddenly opens fire with a machine gun, killing everyone except Mitsuko. As she flees, the remaining girls are also slaughtered by the wind. Mitsuko finds herself in increasingly surreal and horrifying scenarios where her identity and appearance change. In one, she becomes Keiko, a bride marrying a man with a pig’s head. In another, she is Izumi, a student in a marathon. In each situation, her friend Aki supports her, but the surrounding girls are always killed.
Mitsuko eventually encounters a group of revenant girls who try to kill her, explaining that as long as she lives, they will continue to die. Aki rescues her and reveals they are in a fictional world being observed by an unknown force. This force will keep killing everyone unless Mitsuko, as the “main character,” takes drastic action. Each scenario represents a different world, and to reach the final one, Aki insists Mitsuko must kill her brutally. Reluctantly, Mitsuko complies, and a portal opens, leading her to the next reality.
