Mohan Bhargava, an Indian project manager working at NASA on the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) program, resides in the United States. After completing his studies, he chose to stay in the U.S. following the tragic death of his parents in India. Concerned about Kaveri Amma, his childhood caretaker from Uttar Pradesh, Mohan decides to return to India to bring her back to America. Kaveri Amma had moved to an old age home in Delhi after his parents’ passing, but they eventually lost contact.
Taking a break after the successful completion of Phase I of his project, Mohan travels to India. He visits the old age home only to discover that Kaveri Amma had relocated to a village named Charanpur a year earlier. Determined to find her, Mohan heads to Charanpur, renting a recreational vehicle due to concerns about inadequate facilities in the village.
In Charanpur, Mohan reunites with Kaveri Amma and learns that his childhood friend Gita, who lost her parents, had brought her to live with her. Gita runs a school in the village, striving to uplift the community through education. However, the village remains deeply divided by caste and religious differences.
Gita is initially apprehensive about Mohan’s arrival, fearing he might take Kaveri Amma away, leaving her and her younger brother Chikku alone. Kaveri Amma insists on staying until Gita is married, a responsibility she feels compelled to fulfill. Gita’s dedication to women’s empowerment and gender equality inspires Mohan, who begins supporting her efforts to promote education, especially among marginalized communities and girls.
The story explores themes of identity, social change, and the emotional ties that bind individuals to their roots.
