Suzume Iwato is a 17-year-old high school student living with her aunt in Kyushu. One night, she dreams of searching for her mother as a child in a ruined neighborhood. The next morning, while on her way to school, Suzume meets a young man looking for abandoned areas with doors. She tells him about a nearby old onsen resort and later follows him there. At the resort, Suzume discovers a solitary doorframe showing a starlit field, but she cannot enter. She picks up a cat statue, which comes to life and runs away. Frightened, she returns to school. Later, Suzume notices a fiery column rising from the onsen site, visible only to her. She heads back and finds the man struggling to close the door. Suzume helps him, and they manage to shut it, causing the column to disappear. However, an invisible force crashes into the town, causing earthquake-like damage.
Suzume takes the injured man, Souta Munakata, to her home to treat his wound. He explains that he travels across Japan, sealing doors in abandoned places to prevent a supernatural “worm” from causing earthquakes. The cat from the resort reappears and transforms Souta into a child’s chair.
Now a three-legged chair, Souta chases the cat onto a ferry bound for Ehime, with Suzume following. He reveals that the cat is a keystone and that the worm was unleashed when it was removed from near the abandoned door. In Ehime, Suzume and Souta use social media clues from locals who have photographed the cat, named “Daijin,” to track it across Shikoku.
