Description: Imagine a story where two people are in love, but one struggles with commitment and chooses to flee instead of confronting the situation. Yet, their feelings remain genuine. At the worst possible moment, the person who left decides to return, stirring up complications but refusing to let go. Does this sound like countless romantic comedies you’ve seen? That’s the essence of *Suryakantham*.
The film begins with a vibrant mass song and a spirited dance sequence, setting the stage for a bold, outspoken protagonist unafraid to speak their mind. It also introduces a caring mother eager to see her child settled in life, while the child resists and instead wields sharp sarcasm. This familiar setup, often reserved for male leads in Telugu cinema, is refreshingly given to the female protagonist, Niharika Konidela, rather than Rahul Vijay.
*Suryakantham* holds significant potential but falls short of delivering on it. What starts as a quirky story about a free-spirited woman grappling with her ex-boyfriend’s marriage to someone else devolves into a melodramatic love triangle. The film’s first half spends its time establishing the characters of Abhi and Pooja and their relationship, evolving into a lighthearted narrative once Suryakantham enters the picture. The interval leaves viewers anticipating more, and despite the director’s convenient storytelling choices, the film remains engaging.
