**Storyline:**
In a near-future setting, the widespread use of remotely controlled robots, known as “Surrogates,” allows people to experience life through idealized avatars while remaining safely at home. The human operators, often depicted as unkempt and homebound, live vicariously through their surrogates, which can perform activities impossible for an average person. Damage to a surrogate causes no harm to its operator, enabling risk-free interactions.
In Boston, FBI agent Tom Greer has been emotionally distant from his wife, Maggie, since their son’s tragic death in a car accident years earlier. Maggie prefers their interactions solely through surrogates, criticizing Tom’s desire to reconnect in their real forms.
Tom and his partner, Agent Jennifer Peters, investigate the deaths of two individuals whose surrogates were destroyed at a Fort Point club. One of the victims, Jared Canter, is the son of Dr. Lionel Canter, the creator of surrogates and former head of Virtual Self Industries (VSI). The agents discover that a human named Miles Strickland used a unique weapon to overload the surrogates’ systems, killing their operators.
During an attempt to arrest Strickland, Tom is injured when Strickland uses the weapon. Tom’s surrogate crashes into an anti-surrogate zone called the Dread Reservation, where a mob destroys his surrogate, forcing him to navigate the world without it. The Dread leader, known as the Prophet, kills Strickland and seizes the weapon.
Tom uncovers that VSI initially developed the weapon under a government contract to disable surrogates. However, the weapon also bypassed fail-safe protocols, endangering operators. The project was abandoned, and all prototypes were supposedly destroyed. Tom eventually discovers his FBI superior, Andrew Stone, supplied the weapon to Strickland.
