Description: In 1979, Deputy Sheriff Jack Lamb from Lillian, Ohio, and his 14-year-old son Joe are grieving the loss of their wife and mother, Elizabeth, who died in a workplace accident. Jack holds Louis Dainard responsible since he was the one Elizabeth covered for after he arrived drunk. Joe’s only keepsake of his mother is a locket.
Four months later, Joe’s friend Charles is creating a zombie movie for a Super 8 film competition. He recruits Joe, along with friends Preston, Martin, Cary, and Alice, Louis Dainard’s daughter. Despite the tension between their fathers, Joe and Alice grow close.
During late-night filming at a train depot, a pickup truck collides head-on with an approaching train, causing a massive derailment and destroying the depot. The children scatter in the chaos. Joe witnesses a train wagon’s door being violently torn off. The group regroups, finding crates filled with mysterious white cubes among the wreckage. They discover their biology teacher, Dr. Woodward, barely alive in the truck. He warns them to forget what they’ve seen before a military convoy, led by Colonel Nelec, arrives. Nelec finds an empty Super 8 film box.
In the days that follow, strange events unfold in the town: dogs flee, people disappear, power fluctuates, and electronic devices are stolen. Sheriff Lamb confronts Nelec but is arrested. Nelec orders flamethrowers to start a wildfire, using it as a pretext to evacuate residents to the military base. Joe and Charles review their footage from the derailment and spot a large creature escaping the train. Meanwhile, Nelec interrogates Woodward in a military hospital, leading to Woodward’s death when he refuses to cooperate.
Metal objects across town are mysteriously drawn to the top of a tower by an unknown force. The white cubes reassemble into a spaceship. The alien creature enters the ship, and Joe’s locket is pulled toward the tower. After a moment, Joe releases it, completing the ship’s construction. As the ship ascends into space, Joe takes Alice’s hand.
