Storyline:
The narrative opens with a view from a workshop window, focusing on a treehouse before shifting to a bedroom inside a dollhouse located in the workshop. Steve Graham wakes his teenage son Peter and 13-year-old daughter Charlie for their 78-year-old grandmother Ellen Taper Leigh’s funeral. Steve discovers Charlie asleep in the treehouse.
Steve’s wife Annie, a miniature diorama artist, delivers the eulogy at her mother’s funeral. During the service, Charlie clucks and sketches something unusual. Later that night, Annie speaks with Charlie about Ellen. Charlie mentions that her grandmother wished she were a boy and wonders aloud who will take care of her now that Ellen is gone. Annie experiences a haunting vision of Ellen after revisiting a memory book in her workshop.
At school, a bird crashes into a window and dies. Charlie goes outside and decapitates the bird, while a woman across the street waves at her. Annie tells Steve she’s going to a movie but instead attends a grief counseling session. There, she discusses her mother’s mental health struggles, including dissociative identity disorder and dementia.
Meanwhile, Peter, annoyed at having to watch Charlie, leaves her unsupervised to smoke marijuana with his friends. Many of the women at the gathering wear long flannel shirts. Left alone, Charlie accidentally eats chocolate cake containing an allergen, triggering a severe anaphylactic reaction.
