Description: The movie “Suicide Club” (2001) unfolds over six days, featuring a fictional J-Pop group called “Dessert,” whose performances bookend the film. The story kicks off with a concert where Dessert performs their song “Mail Me.”
On May 27 in Tokyo, a shocking event occurs as 54 teenage schoolgirls take their own lives by jumping in front of a train. Shortly after, two nurses at a hospital commit suicide by leaping from a window. At both scenes, rolls of skin are discovered, matching the victims’ remains. Detectives Kuroda, Shibusawa, and Murata are alerted by a hacker named Kiyoko about a connection between the suicides and a mysterious website displaying red and white circles representing suicide counts.
The following day, a group of high school students jumps off a roof during lunch, sparking citywide panic and rumors of a “Suicide Club.” By May 29, the wave of suicides has spread across Japan. Mitsuko, a young woman, is struck by her boyfriend, Masa, who has jumped from a building. Mitsuko is detained and questioned by the police, who uncover a butterfly tattoo on her during a strip search.
On May 30, the police receive a tip that another mass suicide will occur at 7:30 PM on the same train platform. Despite setting up a stakeout, no suicide happens. However, smaller-scale suicides continue nationwide, claiming countless lives, including Detective Kuroda’s family. After receiving a call from the boy who had warned about the planned suicide, Kuroda tragically takes his own life.
The film delves into themes of societal pressures and the inexplicable nature of collective despair, leaving viewers to grapple with its haunting narrative.
