Description: Strangers on a Train (1951) is a gripping psychological thriller. The story follows Guy Haines, an amateur tennis player who wishes to divorce his unfaithful wife, Miriam, to marry Anne Morton, the daughter of a U.S. Senator. During a train ride, Guy encounters Bruno Antony, a wealthy and charming psychopath. Bruno proposes a chilling plan: they exchange murders—Bruno will kill Miriam, and Guy will eliminate Bruno’s despised father. Since both would target strangers with no apparent motive, they would avoid suspicion.

Although Guy dismisses Bruno’s proposal as absurd, he carelessly leaves behind an engraved cigarette lighter during their conversation. Meanwhile, Guy confronts Miriam, who reveals she is pregnant by another man and refuses to grant him a divorce. This escalates into a heated argument.

Later, Bruno follows Miriam to an amusement park and strangles her while Guy is on a train back to Washington. Upon returning home, Guy learns of Miriam’s murder from Bruno, who now demands that Guy fulfill his end of the deal by killing Bruno’s father.

Guy visits the Mortons, where Anne’s father informs him of Miriam’s death. Anne’s sister, Barbara, warns that Guy’s motive makes him a prime suspect. The police question Guy but cannot confirm his alibi because a crucial witness, a professor he met on the train, is too drunk to recall their encounter. Instead of arresting Guy, the authorities assign him a constant police escort.

Bruno intensifies the pressure by following Guy around Washington, introducing himself to Anne, and even attending a party at Senator Morton’s home. There, Bruno demonstrates a mock strangulation, his unsettling gaze lingering on Barbara, who resembles Miriam. The tension builds as Bruno’s obsession and manipulation threaten to unravel Guy’s life.
