Description: Harold Crick, an IRS agent, leads a solitary life strictly governed by his wristwatch. Assigned to audit Ana Pascal, a baker who intentionally avoids taxes, Harold begins hearing a woman’s voice narrating his life. When his watch malfunctions and he resets it, the narrator reveals this act will lead to his death. Consulting a psychiatrist, Harold is directed to a literary expert, Professor Jules Hilbert. Initially skeptical, Jules becomes intrigued after recognizing omniscient narrative elements in Harold’s story and advises him to determine whether his life is a comedy or tragedy.
As Harold audits Ana, he develops feelings for her, but when he unknowingly rejects her gift of cookies, fearing it may be seen as a bribe, he interprets this as a tragic sign. Jules suggests Harold stay home to test his theory, but his apartment is accidentally demolished by a construction crew. Jules concludes Harold’s life is beyond his control and encourages him to embrace his fate and enjoy whatever time remains.
Harold takes time off work, learns to play the guitar, moves in with his colleague Dave, and begins a relationship with Ana. Convinced Ana loves him, Harold decides his story is a comedy. However, while meeting Jules, Harold discovers Karen Eiffel, a renowned author, is the narrator. Jules warns that all her books end with the protagonist’s death, leaving Harold to confront his uncertain destiny.
