In the land of Avalonia, surrounded by an unending range of mountains, Jaeger Clade and his son Searcher are renowned adventurers who explore uncharted territories. During one of their expeditions, Searcher discovers a plant emitting green energy, which he names Pando. While Searcher and the team believe Pando is a valuable discovery, Jaeger insists on continuing their mission, leading to a rift between them. Jaeger sets off alone into the unknown.
Twenty-five years later, Searcher has become famous for harnessing Pando as a sustainable energy source for Avalonia. He is married to Meridian, a fellow harvester, and they have a son named Ethan, who often feels embarrassed by Searcher’s attempts to connect with his crush, Diazo. One day, Callisto Mal, a former teammate of Jaeger and Avalonia’s leader, arrives in a massive airship called the Venture. She reveals that Pando is losing its power and seeks Searcher’s help to investigate the cause.
Searcher joins a new expedition to a giant sinkhole where Pando’s roots have been found. Along the way, Ethan and their dog, Legend, sneak aboard the airship, while Meridian follows in her crop duster. As they descend, they are attacked by red wyvern-like creatures and eventually break through a fragile crust into a hidden subterranean world.
During the chaos, Searcher and Legend are separated from the group and encounter a dangerous creature called the Reaper. Unexpectedly, Jaeger, who has been living underground for decades, rescues them. Jaeger explains that he has been exploring the underground world but is blocked by an acidic ocean. He agrees to help locate the Venture as a way to cross it. Meanwhile, Ethan ventures off on his own and befriends a peculiar blue creature he names Splat, who guides him toward Searcher.
