Description: Leo Borlock cherishes a porcupine tie as a memento of his late father. After being bullied at a new school and having his tie damaged, he receives a new one every birthday from an unknown sender, though he keeps them private. In high school, Leo, played by Graham Verchere, joins the marching band as a trumpet player and assists his friend Kevin Singh, portrayed by Karan Brar, who hosts an interview show for the A.V. club. Their routine changes when Stargirl Caraway, played by Grace VanderWaal, arrives. She captures Leo’s attention by singing “Happy Birthday” to him on a ukulele in front of the school. Later, she energizes their struggling football team, the Mudfrogs, with a performance of “Be True to Your School,” nearly securing their first victory. Despite an invitation to join their show, Stargirl declines.
Stargirl soon becomes a symbol of good luck for the football team with her rendition of “We Got the Beat.” She starts spending time with Leo, encouraging him to step out of his comfort zone. Archie, the local paleontologist camp owner, tells Leo about Stargirl’s background: she lives with her single mother and was homeschooled for much of her life. Her connection to Leo stems from Archie. Stargirl later wins the Speech regionals with an unconventional speech about rats, surprising everyone. When Leo mentions the ties while anonymously returning a bike to a hospitalized boy, Stargirl claims no knowledge of them. Their relationship deepens when she suggests a song, “Thirteen,” and shares their first kiss, marking the start of their romance.
During a crucial game, Stargirl’s decision to accompany an injured opponent to the hospital sparks backlash, leading to the team’s loss. The next day, she faces hostility from the students. Leo’s friends are upset but eventually forgive him. Kevin invites Stargirl to explain herself on his show, where she reveals her real name, Susan, and explains her philosophy that everyone is made of stardust. However, her situation worsens when Hillari Kimble confronts her for returning a bike to her permanently injured brother. Overwhelmed, Stargirl leaves in tears.
