Description: In 1994, Egyptologist and linguist Daniel Jackson, Ph.D., is invited by Catherine Langford to translate ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs on cover stones dating back 9,994 years, which her father had discovered in Giza, Egypt, in 1928. Jackson is brought to a classified U.S. Air Force facility commanded by Special Operations Colonel Jack O’Neil. After studying the hieroglyphs, Jackson concludes that they refer to a “stargate” that uses constellations as spatial coordinates. Upon this discovery, Jackson is shown the actual Stargate, uncovered by Langford’s father decades earlier. Using Jackson’s coordinates, the team aligns the Stargate’s metal ring with external markings, activating a wormhole that connects to a distant planet. Jackson joins O’Neil and his team—Reilly, Porro, Freeman, Brown, Ferretti, and Kawalsky—as they journey through the wormhole.
They arrive on the desert planet Abydos, finding themselves in a pyramid-like structure. Jackson locates the Stargate’s controls but lacks the coordinates to return home. O’Neil instructs Reilly, Porro, Freeman, and Ferretti to guard the Stargate while the rest of the group explores the planet. Nearby, they encounter a tribe of humans mining a mysterious mineral. Jackson communicates with the tribe, who speak a form of Ancient Egyptian, and learns they view the team as emissaries of their god Ra. The tribe’s leader, Kasuf, offers his daughter Sha’uri to Jackson as a gift. Though Jackson initially declines, he later develops feelings for her.
O’Neil befriends Kasuf’s teenage son Skaara and his friends, as Skaara reminds him of his own deceased son. Through hidden markings and conversations with the tribe, Jackson discovers that Ra is an alien who came to Earth during the Ancient Egyptian period, seeking human hosts to prolong his life.
