Description: In 2285, Admiral James T. Kirk observes a simulator session conducted by Captain Spock’s trainees. During the exercise, Lieutenant Saavik commands the USS Enterprise on a mission to rescue the crew of the damaged Kobayashi Maru but is ambushed by Klingon cruisers, resulting in severe damage. The simulation is a no-win scenario intended to test the character of Starfleet officers. Later, Dr. McCoy visits Kirk on his birthday and, noticing Kirk’s low spirits due to aging, suggests he seek a new command instead of staying behind a desk.
Meanwhile, the starship Reliant is on a mission to locate a lifeless planet for testing the Genesis Device, a technology designed to transform dead matter into habitable worlds. Commander Pavel Chekov and Captain Clark Terrell beam down to what they believe is Ceti Alpha VI, only to discover they are actually on Ceti Alpha V. They are captured by Khan Noonien Singh, a genetically engineered tyrant, who reveals that Ceti Alpha VI exploded years earlier, leaving his world devastated. Khan, who was exiled to the planet by Kirk fifteen years prior, implants Chekov and Terrell with eel larvae that grant him control over their minds. Using them, he seizes the Reliant and learns about the Genesis Device. Khan then attacks Regula I, a space station where the device is being developed by Dr. Carol Marcus, Kirk’s former lover, and their son, David.
Kirk takes command of the Enterprise after it receives a distress call from Regula I. While en route, the Enterprise is ambushed and damaged by the Reliant. Khan demands that Kirk surrender all Genesis-related materials in exchange for sparing his crew. Kirk stalls for time and, through a clever tactic, lowers Reliant’s shields remotely, enabling a counterattack.
