**Storyline:**
In 1976, at a Boston Police station, two officers discuss the arrest of Father John Geoghan for child molestation. A high-ranking cleric speaks to the mother of the affected children. The Assistant District Attorney intervenes, instructing the police to keep the incident from the media. The case is suppressed, and Geoghan is released.
In 2001, Marty Baron, the new managing editor of *The Boston Globe*, meets Walter “Robby” Robinson, head of the newspaper’s investigative team, “Spotlight.” After Baron reads a *Globe* article by lawyer Mitchell Garabedian accusing Cardinal Bernard Law, the Archbishop of Boston, of knowing about Geoghan’s abuse and failing to act, he urges the Spotlight team to investigate. Journalist Michael Rezendes contacts Garabedian, who initially refuses to speak. Disregarding instructions, Rezendes reveals his association with Spotlight, convincing Garabedian to cooperate.
Initially focusing on one priest who was repeatedly relocated, the team uncovers a broader pattern of sexual abuse by priests across Massachusetts and a systemic cover-up by the Boston Archdiocese. With the help of Phil Saviano, leader of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), the team expands their investigation to thirteen priests. Richard Sipe, a former priest who worked with abusive clergy, suggests that approximately 6% of Boston priests—around 90 individuals—were involved in abuse.
The team compiles a list of 87 suspected priests and begins identifying victims to support their findings. The investigation takes a personal toll: reporter Matt Carroll discovers a priest treatment center near his family’s home but can’t warn his children or neighbors. Reporter Sacha Pfeiffer struggles to attend church with her grandmother after witnessing the scale of the abuse.
