Description: During a calculus class at Covington High, senior student Katelyn Ogden suddenly explodes, covering her classmates and the room in blood. Authorities detain the class for investigation but fail to identify the cause of the blast beyond ruling out an attack. Senior student Mara Carlyle warns her peers that such an incident might recur, sparking fear among them. Later, she receives a message from an anonymous admirer claiming to have harbored feelings for her for years. After Katelyn’s funeral, Mara, under the influence of mushrooms bought from school dealers Jenna and Joe Dalton, meets her friend Tess for tea. Dylan, a fellow student, reveals himself as the admirer, sharing his fear of life’s unpredictability and his desire to act on his feelings.
Mara and Dylan start dating, attending a football game and a party, both of which are abruptly halted when other students, Perry Love and Cranberry Bollinger, explode. The mysterious incidents, dubbed “The Covington Curse,” lead to school closures and draw the attention of government agencies. FBI Agent Carla Rosetti enlists Mara and Tess to assist in the investigation. While exploring potential drug involvement, Mara rides with the Dalton twins, who also explode, resulting in a car crash.
