In 2001, Michael, a writer for TV Guide, is introduced to Kit, a photographer, at a gay nightclub in Manhattan. The two quickly form a connection. As their relationship deepens, Michael grapples with insecurities about his appearance, having previously struggled with weight issues. Kit confides in Michael about an affair he had with someone from the gym. Despite their shared fears of commitment—neither having been in a long-term relationship before—they choose to stay together. During their first Christmas, Kit offers Michael space in his apartment, symbolizing a step towards a shared life.
In 2002, Kit undergoes an appendectomy, and his parents, Bob and Marilyn, visit Manhattan. Not openly out to them, Kit asks Michael to remove any traces of their relationship from the apartment. Upon their arrival, Marilyn becomes suspicious of Michael. After persistent questioning, Kit comes out to his parents and reveals Michael is his boyfriend. While initially hurt by Kit’s secrecy, Marilyn eventually accepts their relationship and welcomes Michael into the family.
Michael and Kit continue to build their life together, eventually moving into a townhouse. During their second Christmas, Michael shares a cherished childhood tradition with Kit—lying under the Christmas tree—a moment he had always dreamed of experiencing with a partner. The film poignantly captures their love, struggles, and the challenges they face as they navigate life and loss together.
