**Storyline:**
A chameleon with anthropomorphic traits pretends to perform in a play, using various objects as “actors.” This leads to a moment of self-reflection, where he questions his true identity, sparking an existential crisis. However, he concludes that he could potentially embody anyone. Unexpectedly, he finds himself stranded in the Mojave Desert in California when his terrarium falls from his owners’ car due to an accident. On his journey, he encounters Roadkill, a nine-banded armadillo who caused the accident and is searching for the mythical “Spirit of the West.”
While navigating the desert, the chameleon narrowly escapes a red-tailed hawk and eventually meets Beans, a desert iguana. Beans takes him to Dirt, an Old West town inhabited by anthropomorphic animals. In Dirt, it is believed that water arrives through a mysterious ritual every Wednesday.
Introducing himself as “Rango,” the chameleon claims to be a tough drifter who once defeated the notorious Jenkins Brothers gang with a single bullet. His fabricated backstory earns him attention, and he clashes with Bad Bill, a Gila monster outlaw. However, a confrontation is avoided when a returning hawk frightens Bad Bill. Later, Rango accidentally kills the hawk by knocking over a water tower, and the town’s mayor, an elderly desert tortoise, appoints him as the new sheriff.
Meanwhile, the townsfolk fear the return of Rattlesnake Jake, a feared gunslinger who once avoided the hawk. As Dirt faces a severe drought, Beans urges Rango to investigate the disappearance of their water supply, stored in a cooler bottle at the town bank. One night, Rango mistakenly aids a group of bank robbers led by Balthazar, a mole. When the water bottle is stolen the next morning, Rango forms a posse to recover it.
