Description: Joe Gardner, a middle school teacher with a deep passion for jazz, lands a successful gig at the Half Note Club. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when an accident separates his soul from his body, transporting him to the You Seminar. This unique center is where souls develop their interests and passions before being sent to inhabit newborn babies. To return to Earth, Joe must collaborate with other souls in training, including 22, a soul who has spent countless years at the You Seminar.
During their journey, 22 and Joe escape from the hospital. Initially scared, 22 gradually finds joy in life’s simple pleasures. They visit Joe’s apartment, where one of his students, Connie, initially plans to quit the band but changes her mind after an inspiring trombone performance, leaving 22 puzzled. Later, they visit Dez the barber, where 22 engages in a profound conversation with him. After an incident where 22 ruins Joe’s pants, they seek help from Libba, who repairs them. During this visit, Joe finally opens up to Libba about his true passion, and she supports him by giving him his late father’s suit.
Just as Moonwind prepares to return Joe and 22 to their respective bodies, 22 has a revelation and decides she wants to experience life for herself. She flees, and Joe chases after her, but they are intercepted by Terry and brought back to the Great Before. There, 22 discovers her badge has been completed, but Joe insists it was only because of his experiences, not her own. Hurt and angry, 22 throws the badge at him and vanishes into the Zone. Joe learns from Jerry that a “spark” doesn’t mean finding one’s purpose but rather signifies readiness to live. Upon returning to Earth, Joe performs successfully but feels unsettled about the events that transpired.
