Description: Set in 1980s Ireland, “Song of the Sea” follows the story of Conor, a lighthouse keeper, who lives on an island with his son Ben, his pregnant wife Bronagh, and their Old English Sheepdog, Cú. Tragedy strikes when Bronagh mysteriously disappears one night after giving birth to their daughter, Saoirse, leaving the family devastated.
Six years later, Conor is emotionally broken, Saoirse remains mute, and Ben harbors resentment toward his sister, blaming her for their mother’s disappearance. On Saoirse’s birthday, their grandmother visits and insists on taking the children to the city, deeming the lighthouse an unsuitable place to raise them. Before leaving, Saoirse discovers a white sealskin coat in Conor’s closet, revealing her true identity as a selkie.
After a transformative swim in the sea, Saoirse is found by her grandmother, who takes the children to the city. However, Saoirse’s health begins to decline without her seal coat and connection to the ocean. On Halloween night, Saoirse and Ben encounter magical faeries who seek her help to return to Tír na nÓg. But their journey is interrupted by the Owl Witch, Macha, who turns the faeries to stone.
As Saoirse’s condition worsens, Ben discovers the truth about her fate through the Great Seanachaí. Determined to save his sister, he follows a magical guide that leads him to Macha in a desperate attempt to restore Saoirse’s seal coat and save her life.
“Song of the Sea” is a heartfelt tale of family, loss, and magical discovery.
