**Storyline:**
After having her jail sentence commuted and losing custody of her only daughter, Rosie, Tse journeys to New York through a human smuggler known as “Snakehead,” hoping to reunite with her. Hailing from Taiwan, Sister Tse pays a smuggler $50,000 for her passage to New York. Upon arrival, she encounters Dai Mah, a brother owner who demands she repay $57,000. Unable to afford the sum, she must gain the favor of the matriarch of a crime family and quickly rise through its ranks. Her success comes at a cost—during her time in America, she faces harsh mistreatment while working in a brothel. After repaying Dai Mah, assaulting a customer, and killing Dai Mah’s pimp, she sets out to find Rosie, only to discover that her daughter has been adopted by a New York couple.
“Snakehead” offers a raw portrayal of the intersection between organized crime and human trafficking in New York City’s Chinatown. Directed by Evan Jackson Leong, the film provides an unapologetic glimpse into the lives of a villainous yet tightly-knit family. Through an intra-diasporic lens, the story pits Chinese American kingpin Dai Mah (Jade Wu) and her sons against Sister Tse (Shuya Chang), a Chinese national who owes nearly $60,000 for her smuggling and is willing to become a human trafficker herself to clear the debt.
The film aims to explore the global machinery of human trafficking while also presenting a redemptive arc for the women trapped in this criminal underworld. Leong excels in depicting the tragic realities of trafficking but struggles to deliver a compelling narrative for the redemption angle. Wu’s portrayal of Dai Mah is bold and often steals the spotlight, though it isn’t enough to overcome the film’s narrative shortcomings.
