Description: Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, released in 2021, follows the story of Snake Eyes, portrayed by Henry Golding. As a child, Snake Eyes was orphaned after his father was brutally murdered. Driven by a desire for revenge, he grows into a skilled martial artist with a deep thirst for vengeance. His name originates from the moment his father was forced to roll dice to save his life, resulting in a double one.
Two decades later, Snake Eyes encounters Kenta, a Yakuza crime lord, who promises to help him find his father’s killer in exchange for his loyalty. However, when Kenta demands Snake Eyes prove his loyalty by executing a spy, Snake Eyes refuses and escapes with the spy. This spy, Tommy Arashikage, played by Andrew Koji, is Kenta’s cousin and a member of the powerful Arashikage clan. After Kenta’s failed attempt to assassinate Tommy, Kenta was exiled from the clan.
Grateful for Snake Eyes’ assistance, Tommy introduces him to the Arashikage clan. Tommy intends to make Snake Eyes his trusted lieutenant once he assumes leadership of the clan. The clan’s current leader, Tommy’s grandmother Sen, agrees to let Snake Eyes undergo three trials to prove his worth. Success would earn him a place in the clan, while failure would mean death.
Akiko, the clan’s head of security, initially distrusts Snake Eyes. However, after learning about his father’s murder, she begins to develop feelings for him. Despite this, Akiko’s suspicions prove valid, as Snake Eyes has been secretly working for Kenta all along. Tommy’s assassination attempt and subsequent escape were staged to earn his trust, allowing Snake Eyes to infiltrate the clan and steal the powerful Jewel of the Sun, which they have protected for centuries.
As Snake Eyes grows closer to the clan, he begins to feel guilt over his betrayal of Tommy and the others. However, his thirst for vengeance keeps him focused. He successfully completes the first two trials but fails the third, where giant anacondas judge his purity of heart. Due to his deceit, the snakes deem him unworthy. Although he confesses his desire for revenge, he conceals his double agent status, leading to his expulsion from the clan and Tommy’s feelings of betrayal.
