Jamal convinces Salim to let her join them, referring to her as their “third musketeer,” inspired by Alexandre Dumas’ novel “The Three Musketeers.”
The trio is captured by a gangster named Maman, who exploits street children by turning them into beggars. Upon learning that Maman blinds children to make them more effective beggars, Salim escapes with Jamal and Latika. However, while boarding a moving train, Salim intentionally lets go of Latika, leaving her behind to be recaptured by Maman. The brothers spend the following years traveling on trains, surviving by various means such as selling goods, pickpocketing, and pretending to be tour guides at the Taj Mahal.
Years later, Jamal insists on returning to Mumbai to find Latika, who is now being raised by Maman to become a prostitute. Together, they rescue her, and Salim kills Maman. Salim then works for a rival crime lord, Javed, and tensions rise when he orders Jamal to leave him alone with Latika. Years pass, and Jamal, now working as a chaiwala in an Indian call center, searches for Salim and Latika using the center’s database.
The film is a gripping tale of resilience, love, and the pursuit of destiny amidst the challenges of life in the slums.
