**Plot Summary:**
Set in Hell’s Kitchen during the mid-1960s, the story follows four childhood friends: Lorenzo “Shakes” Carcaterra, Tommy Marcano, Michael Sullivan, and John Reilly. Father Robert “Bobby” Carillo, their parish priest, acts as a father figure to them. However, they begin assisting a local gangster named King Benny with minor tasks. During the summer of 1967, the boys accidentally harm a man while attempting to rob a hot dog vendor, leading to their sentencing at the Wilkinson Home for Boys in Upstate New York.
At the facility, they endure physical and sexual abuse at the hands of guards Sean Nokes, Henry Addison, Ralph Ferguson, and Adam Styler. This abuse profoundly alters their lives and fractures their friendship. While at Wilkinson, they participate in the annual football match between inmates and guards. Michael persuades Rizzo, a fellow inmate, to play fiercely to demonstrate their defiance. Their victory enrages the guards, who retaliate by severely beating the boys, confining them to solitary, and ultimately killing Rizzo, falsely attributing his death to pneumonia.
Before Shakes is released in the spring of 1968, he suggests reporting the abuse, but the others refuse, believing no one would care or believe them. They vow never to speak of the trauma again. On Shakes’ final night, the guards subject the boys to one last brutal act of abuse.
Thirteen years later, in 1981, John and Tommy, now criminals, unexpectedly encounter Nokes in a Hell’s Kitchen pub. Confronting him about the past, they fatally shoot him in front of witnesses. Meanwhile, Michael, who has become an assistant district attorney, secretly takes on the case with the intent to sabotage the prosecution and expose the guards’ crimes and Wilkinson’s cover-up.
