After the premiere, Don escapes his fans by jumping into a car driven by Kathy Selden (Debby Reynolds), a stage actress who criticizes his film career.
Later, at a party, the head of Don’s studio introduces a demonstration of talking pictures, which fails to impress the guests. To Don’s surprise, Kathy emerges from a mock cake, revealing her role as a chorus girl. Their interaction leads to a playful cake-throwing incident, leaving Lina embarrassed. Don becomes captivated by Kathy and searches for her, eventually reconciling after Cosmo discovers her working on another production.
As rival studio Warner Bros. achieves success with its first talking picture, Don’s career and relationship with Kathy face new challenges in the evolving world of cinema.
