The story revolves around a group of anti-apartheid activists who take hostages in a bank, demanding the release of Nelson Mandela.
The film has been in development since 2019, with Dube drawing inspiration from the historic siege. Working alongside American Film Institute alumnus Sechaba Morojele, Dube crafted a script that blends factual events with creative storytelling, emphasizing entertainment over documentary-style accuracy. Filming took place in Pretoria, supported by funding from the National Film & Video Foundation.
The cast, announced in March 2022, includes Thabo Rametsi, Noxolo Dlamini, and Stefan Erasmus as the main trio, alongside Arnold Vosloo, Tumisho Masha, Michelle Mosalakae, and Elani Dekker. The movie dramatizes the events of the siege, adapting the real-life activists into fictional characters—Calvin, Aldo, and Terra. The narrative also introduces a “good” white cop, Captain Langerman, portrayed by Vosloo, who gradually respects the activists’ cause, and a “bad” cop, Brigadier Justin Strydom, who represents the oppressive apartheid regime.
Despite its gripping premise, the film incorporates some predictable Hollywood tropes and clichés, which slightly detract from its historical significance. Nonetheless, it remains a compelling portrayal of a pivotal moment in South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle.
