**Plot Summary:**
Miles Raymond is a struggling writer, a wine enthusiast, and a divorced, depressed middle-aged English teacher living in San Diego. He decides to take his soon-to-be-married friend, Jack Cole, a former college roommate and fading actor, on a road trip through the Santa Ynez Valley wine country. Before their journey begins, Miles visits his mother, secretly taking $1,000 from her savings.
Though Jack once gained fame from a popular TV soap opera, his career has since dwindled, and he now works in voice-over commercials while preparing to join his fiancée’s family real estate business. Miles hopes to spend the week relaxing, enjoying wine, and playing golf. However, Jack has other plans—he’s determined to have one last romantic escapade before settling into married life.
During their trip, the pair dine at Miles’ favorite restaurant, *The Hitching Post II*, where they meet Maya, a waitress whom Miles casually knows. Jack senses Maya’s interest in Miles, despite Miles’ assumption that she’s married. Jack lies to Maya, claiming Miles’ manuscript has been accepted for publication, though it’s still under consideration. Later, Jack points out that Maya wasn’t wearing a wedding ring, suggesting she’s single.
At a local winery, they meet Stephanie, a wine pourer who knows Maya. Jack is instantly attracted to her and arranges a double date.
