Description: “Sicario” (2015) is a gripping thriller set in the volatile world of drug cartels. The story begins in Chandler, Arizona, where FBI agents Kate Macer and Reggie Wayne conduct a raid on a suspected Sonora Cartel safe house. During the operation, they uncover dozens of decaying bodies and encounter a booby trap that results in the deaths of two police officers.
Following the raid, Kate is recruited by a joint task force led by CIA officer Matt Graver and the mysterious Alejandro Gillick. The team’s mission is to apprehend Manuel Díaz, a key lieutenant of the Sonora Cartel. Initially, Kate believes the operation is aimed at bringing justice to those responsible for the safe-house tragedy, but she soon realizes the task force’s methods are far from conventional.
The team, including Delta Force operatives, US Marshals, and CIA personnel, travels to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, to extradite Guillermo Díaz, Manuel’s brother and associate. During their return to the US, a violent shootout erupts at a public border checkpoint, leaving Kate shaken. Alejandro’s interrogation of Guillermo reveals crucial information about a drug smuggling tunnel near Nogales, Sonora.
As Kate begins to question the legality and morality of the task force’s actions, she learns their true objective: to disrupt Díaz’s operations, forcing him to seek protection from his boss, Fausto Alarcón, the elusive leader of the Sonora Cartel. By tracking Díaz, they aim to ultimately bring Alarcón to justice.
The team further complicates Díaz’s operations by raiding a bank used for money laundering. While Kate and Reggie want to use the evidence to build a legal case against Díaz, they are ordered to stand down to avoid jeopardizing the mission.
“Sicario” is a tense and thought-provoking film that explores the murky ethics of the war on drugs.
